• Composting could cut climate change emissions

The European Union could be nearly a trillion euros per year better off by 2030 if a current surge of rapidly developing eco-innovations are put into practice within a circular economy framework, according to a study completed for the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Europe is rich in skills and yet relatively poor in resources. The European Union imports six times more natural resources than it exports and, with a global middle class expected to expand by 4 billion people by 2035, the competition for resources and raw materials is likely to impact our economy as well as the world’s environment. To address some of these issues, the European Commission organised a Circular Economy Stakeholder Conference on 25 June 2015, entitled ‘Closing the loop: circular economy – boosting business, reducing waste’.

A successful Dutch initiative that enlisted the general public to contribute to the understanding of air pollution is being scaled-up through a new project funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research programme.
